P78                    Hometown Feelings 

Some people still live in their hometown. However, others may only see itonce or twice a year. Nowadays, millions of Chinese leave the countryside to searchfor work in the cities. Among these is Zhong Wei, a 46-year-old husband and father.He has lived in Wenzhou for the last 13 years. With a hard job in a crayon factory,he doesn't find much time to visit his hometown. “I used to return home at leastonce a year, but I haven't been back for almost three years now. It's a shame, butI just don't have the time,” he says. 

Many people like Zhong Wei regard with great interest how their hometownshave changed. Perhaps large hospitals and new roads have appeared. In many places,the government has also built new schools and sent teachers from the cities to help. 

“I noticedthat's true of my hometown,” adds Zhong Wei. “Children have learned to readand count at my old primary school since the mid-20^th century. But nowthe buildings are really old. I hear they're going to build a new school there.”Zhong Wei thinks such developments are good, and he also knows that his hometown cannot always stay the same. 

According to Zhong Wei, however, some things will never change. “In myhometown, there was a big old tree opposite the school. It is still there and hasbecome quite a symbol of the place. Most of the children in my time liked to playtogether under that big tree, especially during the summer holidays. It was sucha happy childhood. Our hometown has left many soft and sweet memories in our hearts.”

家乡的感觉

“我注意到我的家乡是这样的，”仲伟补充道。“孩子们学会了阅读，在我以前的小学数世纪中期以来。但现在的建筑真的老了。我听说他们要在那里建一所新学校，“仲伟认为这样的发展是好的，他也知道他的家乡不能总是保持不变

然而，据仲伟说，有些事情是永远不会改变的。在我的家乡，有一棵高大的老树在学校对面。它仍然在那里，并已成为一个相当象征的地方。我喜欢的大部分孩子都喜欢在那棵大树下玩，特别是在暑假期间。这是一个如此快乐的童年。我们的家乡在我们的心中留下了许多柔软和甜蜜的回忆。”
