词汇是基础，对于英语基础较差的自考生群体来说，要在有限的时间内掌握大量词汇是最为头疼的，而且非常容易忘记。那么，词汇该怎么学呢？最基础的方法，有五类：联想、组词、归类、物质刺激记忆和对比记忆。
现代英语词汇词与词之间存在着各种语源、语义、语音、逻辑等关系。根据这些关系，找到词汇之间的相互性或者差异性，从基本的词根开始，通过变换词缀，不仅可以记住词汇，还能更确切地知道词汇的意思。
不孤立地学习英语词义。一个英语单词的词义有很多种，一个词的确切意义只有在上下文中才能具体地体现出来。如：Jane’s pale face suggusted that he wasill,and her parents suggested that he have a medicalexamination. suggest 通常做“建议”讲，但此句中第一个suggest 却作“暗示”讲，第二个suggest 才作“建议”讲。笔者教完学生词汇以后，喜欢让他们用所学的词编成一句话或几句话，这样容易加深他们的印象。如：记bleeding,pressure,firmly,affected,slightly 这些词，可串成一句话 Ifthe bleeding doesn’t stop,put pressure on it firmlyand lay the affected person down， with the headslightly lower than the body. 这样记忆容易多了，也不易忘记。
字母变化记忆法
英语单词中以某个单词为基础,加、减、换、调一个字母就成了另一个新单词。具体方法如下:
1. 前面加字母。例如: is his, ear near/hear, read bread
2. 后面加字母。例如: hear heart, p lane p lanet
3. 中间加字母。例如: though through, tree three, for four
4. 减字母。例如: she he, close lose, start star
5. 换字母。例如: book look / cook, cake lake /wake /make / take
6. 调字母(即改变字母顺序) 。例如: blow bowl, sing sign, from form
