在“说”的能力方面，一词多义十分重要。因为越是常用的词汇，它们的词义与用法就越多。如果我们对每个单词只记一个意思，要记多少单词才够?当需要表达的时候，又如何能马上想得起来。我们若把一些常用词汇的主要意思与用法记住，表达起来就容易得多，灵活得多，快捷得多。如前面提到的一个单词可能有风马牛不相及的意义的情况特别多，且都是使用频率很高的词汇。如fall，既有“跌倒”，又有“秋天”的意思；“lift”既有“举起”又有“电梯”的意思；“gift”既有“礼物”，又有“才能、天资”的意思等等。
